Defining goals and the road to success

Wow, just realized that this headline is probably the most pretentious so far! Well, I guess that is an accomplishment in itself?

Anyhow, I was listening to one of the many awesome podcasts that Jillian Michaels produce, and on this particular one she was talking about goals and the importance of making goals to be successful in life. I found this especially interesting since I am TERRIBLE of starting something and keeping it up! I can be very good at coming up with things I want to achieve, because I am what you would call a thinker. What I want to strive towards becoming though is a doer. Not analyze things into little pieces, but just go with it, you know?

So, Jillian was talking about how it isn’t very difficult for most people to come up with things they want, because we all want things. We all have certain issues and areas in our lives, where we definitely would like some improvement, whether it is losing weight, getting a better job, finding a new apartment and what have you. The problem arises in the actual execution of doing what you want. The journey you have to go on to reach that particular thing you want improved in your life.
According to Jillian, the first thing you need to do is to know what it is you want. The final stop of your journey. It has to be concrete! That is where most of us fail, we say blurry things like “I want to be healthy”, “I want to be a better person” and so on.. Well, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN EXACTLY?! What does “being healthy” mean to you personally? You being at a certain weight? Bench-pressing a 100kg? Being able to run a marathon? WHAT? This is the first step, and in some ways the most important one. Knowing exactly what your goal is. Because if you don’t know your destination, how will you know how to get there? Superimportant you guys!

When you have figured out what exactly it is that you want, for example losing 20kg, you decide how long it’s going to take you to reach that goal. Then you make micro-goals, little steps, where you figure out the exact journey. For example, if you decide that you’re going to lose 20kg in 5 months, you brake that down to 4kg a month, and 1kg a week. That is what you have to do to ultimately reach your 20kg weight loss.

Alright, so now you know how much you want to lose, you have also broken it down into smaller goals. Now you have to think about how much time you are willing to put into reaching every small goal. How many hours, what activities you are willing to participate in and what have you. This is also very important steps, because you are NOT going to keep up the work if you’re doing something you absolutely despise! So with saying that, if you totally hate running, DON’T RUN! Luckily, there are so, so many activities that you can do to burn those extra calories. Bike, walk, dance, swim, rock-climb, skate, ski, join a class at your local gym etc etc etc. It really doesn’t have to be awful at all working out, promise! Although, there are definitely no shortcuts, so you HAVE TO get out of your comfort-zone, to get results!  I can’t say that enough times! You should apply that to all areas of your life really, if you want success.

Finally, to make this journey not all blood, sweat and tears, but actually fun, make sure you take time to really enjoy every small goal that you reach, every little step of the way. It will help you to remain focus, prevent you from losing track and to see the bigger picture. Also, if you focus on every little step on the way, you will be more clear-headed and see if something may not be working so that you can adjust things into success.

Remember, even the longest of journeys, starts with one single step.
